We serve San Francisco with deep tissue massage therapy for TMJ. Massage therapy may offer relief for people with TMJ - also known as TMJ syndrome or temporomandibular joint disorder.

What is TMJ?

TMJ affects the temporomandibular joint, which connects your jaw to the side of your skull. TMJ Syndrome involves pain and stiffness in the jaw, face, and neck. TMJ is also known to cause migraines in some people. Those with TMJ can also experience pain, stiffness and discomfort elsewhere in the body as a result of the body trying to account for the tension and imbalance in the jaw and neck area.

Causes of TMJ

TMJ can be caused by many things. Often it is caused by stress leading to an individual clenching their jaw without realizing it. This tensing of the jaw and neck can happen during waking hours and/or at night while asleep.

What is a TMJ targeted massage like?

Every TMJ deep tissue massage therapy session in our San Francisco day spa starts with the patient standing clothed while our practitioner, Candace, conducts a structural scan to see what body areas may be additionally impacted by the TMJ. Often, the tension focused at the temporomandibular joint causes issues elsewhere. After this scan the patient rests on the massage table, and the massage therapist works to release any body blocks first to prepare the body to accept the TMJ targeted treatment. Finally, the patient is ready for targeted TMJ trigger point release at the jaw area including intraoral massage. Typically, significant relief is experienced after about four 30-minute TMJ massage sessions performed onsite at our San Francisco day spa location.
